Easter is Coming

Easter is coming on April 4. It's not too early to invite a friend, neighbor, coworker or family member to our Easter services.  Please begin praying right now that God will do something God-sized in our church family on that day. Begin praying that God will do something God-sized in your own life that day, too.

Take the Next Step

At some point, most people who begin attending First begin to ask, "What's my next step?" So we've created Next Step! Next Step is our upgraded three-week membership information class. It’s a great way to learn a great deal about our church. Attendance at Next Step does not obligate you to join. However, completion of all three weeks is a part of the membership process here at First Hattiesburg.

The Joy of Serving and Worshipping Jesus

Good Morning Jeff,

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the message on Sunday morning. I was raised Landmark Missionary Faithway Footwashing Baptist! Whew! That’s a mouthful! Each Sunday morning, I got my family up, went to church and Sunday School. In the car on the way home, I would ask my kids, "What did you talk about in Sunday School today? Did you say your memory verse? " The answer was many, many days "No Ma’am, we weren't even asked a question." Mark and I did not like the Sunday School. It was in the auditorium. We just listened as the lesson was presented, sang a few songs, listened to the message and came home. Let me back up. Prior to leaving FOR church, I had to fuss to get everyone up because no one wanted to go (including myself) but it was what we were supposed to do. By the time we got to church, I would sit on the bench with steam coming from my ears because of the hassle of getting everyone to church. One day it dawned on me - we were just going through the motions of playing church because it was what I was “supposed to do". No one was growing, learning, or enjoying serving our Jesus!

Since we have been at First we have learned the joy of serving and worshipping Jesus. It doesn't much matter what you wear, just come! Doesn't matter what color you are, just come! Bring anyone! Church now for us is such a refreshing, recharging place. It reminded me of how unconditional God's love is for us. We are not weighed down with rules and conditions to serve him. It doesn't matter what religion you are, just come hear about Jesus.

We look so forward to church now. Thank you for all you do. If you ever need anything, please do not hesitate to call us. We would be honored to help in any way we can.

Smiles,
Kim

A Feeling of Connection and Support

Mr. Jeff Clark

Hope everything is going well with you and your family. I just wanted to let you know that your message on Sunday really spoke to me. My name is Lauren and I'm a grad student at Southern and I've been going to church at First for nearly two years. The testimony of that lady (I forgot her name) reminded me of how I have a similar story. I moved here from Northwest Indiana (right outside Chicago) in June of 2007 to get a head start on grad school and get settled into a new place. I came here knowing no one and my closest family was back in Indiana (12-13 hours away). After trying to fit in with the other students in my program, I quickly learned that wasn't going to work for me because I couldn't handle going out to drink to get drunk every night and how vulgar they were. It got so bad that I would choose to stay home in my apartment and only talk to friends from home on the phone. I knew if nothing changed I wasn't going to make it in grad school because I had no support here. So I finally got up the nerve to start attending some different churches. First appealed to me because the service was called "The Gathering" and that's what it was called back at my undergrad school, Hope College. From there it didn't take too long to get involved. I'm an incredibly shy person by nature (until I get to know people) so all it took was one person inviting me to a pot luck with a bunch of people that also attend First and I was hooked. I was finally finding the support I needed down here. It's been awesome!! I've got a great close group of friends and I go to the young professionals Bible study when I'm not helping out with the 2-year-olds in the nursery. Now that I've been able to make a connection and feel completely supported and like I have a family here I hope that I'm able to pay that forward to someone else that needs to feel a connection and support. Anyway...I just thought I'd share that with you because it's been on my mind since Sunday. Major props to all the people in the church for making such a comforting setting! Have a blessed day.

Lauren
